The painting corresponds to the watercolor: 'Rozenfeest' which is in the possession of the Verwey Museum in Haarlem. In the book: Kees Verwey Aquarellen this watercolor is depicted. This book is part of this lot and will be donated, together with the painting, to the highest bidder.
Verwey studied from 1918-1919 at the School for Art and Applied Arts in Haarlem and from 1925-1926 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Henri Boot, the founder of the Haarlem School, and of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita and Johannes Hendricus Jurres. He made, among other works, (flower)still lifes, portraits, watercolors and studio pieces, with his own studio on the Spaarne in Haarlem serving as the setting. He remained active well into old age. His style derives from Impressionism. Influences from Breitner and Seurat's divisionism brought him to a personal synthesis of Impressionism and Colorism.
