AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful illustrated edition of this work, in its original full monochrome brown percaline binding, front board signed A. Souze.

The work is enriched with 87 black-and-white wood engravings, both within the text and as plates, as well as 2 folded black-and-white maps outside the text of Lower and Upper Egypt.

The work first seeks to trace the pharaonic heritage, recalling the temples, the pyramids and the archaeological remains that attest to the grandeur of the ancient civilization, while highlighting the growing interest of European scholars in Egyptology.

He then describes the landscapes of the country, the fertility of the lands irrigated by the Nile, as well as the ways of life of the rural populations, emphasizing the permanence of customs and the strength of religious beliefs.

Hervé also devotes pages to the influence of the Muslim clergy, to social structures and to the relationships between the different classes, offering a nuanced view of the tensions between tradition and modernity -

Good interior condition, foxing on certain pages otherwise no stains, pencil marks, tears or missing parts. The work is enhanced with 87 black-and-white wood engravings in-text and as plates, as well as 2 folded maps in black and white, not in text, of Lower and Upper Egypt.
