Beautiful illustrated edition of this work, in its original full monochrome brown percaline binding, front board signed A. Souze.
The work is enriched with 87 black-and-white wood engravings, both within the text and as plates, as well as 2 folded black-and-white maps outside the text of Lower and Upper Egypt.
The work first seeks to trace the pharaonic heritage, recalling the temples, the pyramids and the archaeological remains that attest to the grandeur of the ancient civilization, while highlighting the growing interest of European scholars in Egyptology.
He then describes the landscapes of the country, the fertility of the lands irrigated by the Nile, as well as the ways of life of the rural populations, emphasizing the permanence of customs and the strength of religious beliefs.
Hervé also devotes pages to the influence of the Muslim clergy, to social structures and to the relationships between the different classes, offering a nuanced view of the tensions between tradition and modernity -

Very good condition of the binding, the work in its full original monochrome brown percaline card binding, decorated for the front board signed A. Souze, the back board with a black geometric design, light signs of wear, very beautiful gilt edges, very nice smooth spine with a slightly dull 'hair' in four decorative false compartments, two of which bear the author, title and publisher in gilt letters.
Good interior condition, foxing on certain pages otherwise no stains, pencil marks, tears or missing parts. The work is enhanced with 87 black-and-white wood engravings in-text and as plates, as well as 2 folded maps in black and white, not in text, of Lower and Upper Egypt. Beautiful original petrol-blue endpapers with a price tag glued to the first fixed endpaper, and a small old stamp affixed to the top of the first flyleaf as well as to the top of the title page and to the recto of the last flyleaf.
