Mid-20th-century Myanmar lacquered bamboo offering box, Hsun-It, composed of five interlocking pieces with a large bowl for rice, a plate for vegetables, and a smaller bowl for fish or meat, measuring 37 cm high and 37 cm in diameter, provenance Galerie/Antiquaire, in good condition, title Boîte à offrandes - Birmanie, sold with no stand.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Old Hsun it, a lacquered, woven bamboo offering box composed of five interlocking elements, used by the faithful to bring food to monasteries; rice was placed in the large bowl, then vegetables on a tray, then fish or meat, and often tamarind candies were placed under the small upper bowl which could serve as a scoop or cup. Bagan Region, Myanmar, in the first half of the 20th century.
The family name of the owners of this lacquer is painted on the top of the bowl, which helped them locate it.
37 cms in height and 37 cms in diameter, i.e., perfect symmetry.
A beautiful antique object, very decorative, with a timeless shape.
Jean Dumoulin's Travel Diary
During my trip to the Bagan region in 2017, I had the opportunity to purchase a substantial lot of hsun it from one of my sourcers who had bought them himself from a monastery near Monywa that no longer had any use for them, as plastic or metal was increasingly being used.
State
Good condition for an item of this era that has been used for at least three generations, it bears the signs of its use, which does not detract from its charm (see photos). The item could be waxed to restore its shine, but personally I prefer to leave the objects in their original condition.
A similar model can be found in the book, 'Burma and the Art of Lacquer' by Ralph Isaacs and T. Richard Burton (see photos).
Will be packed with care, traceable and insured.
