A 19th‑century wooden grain measure from Germany, hand‑forged metalwork with a steel base frame, dimensions 60 cm (W) × 49 cm (D) × 17 cm (H), and a weight of about 5 kg in reasonable used condition with some small parts possibly missing.
Description from the seller
A very rare grain measure from 1797, originating from a private collection.
On the bottom of the container is the owner's mark: B.M., a city coat of arms, the capacity mark: 1/2 and the year 1797.
Originally this tub was used to measure out grain. But it is also perfectly suitable as a wooden tub.
The rod in the center of the trough was used to level the grain evenly.
Only a few of this model have survived worldwide. They are all in museums or in private collections. That it is being offered for sale is a rare opportunity.
The capacity measure 1/2 is from before the metric system. In Germany, the metric system was introduced in 1868.
The basin is completely handmade, and the metalwork is hand-forged—a remarkable piece of craftsmanship.
On the underside, a sturdy frame made of steel bars.
The bottom plank has a few shrinkage cracks after 229 years—see photo.
There have been several repairs carried out over more than 200 years, which give the hull extra character and appearance.
If you're looking for something truly special to place by your stove or fireplace, this is for you.
This lot has been carefully cleaned and will be carefully packed, shipped via registered mail with insurance, and includes a Track & Trace code so you can follow the shipment. Pickup in Ridderkerk - Zuid Holland is also possible. I have delicious hand-ground coffee.
