Paul Shapiro (born in 1939) grew up in the Boston area and pursued biology studies at Northeastern University from 1957 to 1958. Later, Shapiro decided to become an artist and left the university. He enrolled in evening classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in early 1959 to study drawing.
Shapiro's landscape works have been and remain a major influence on the look of landscape painting in the Southwest. In 1990, the artist abandoned the emphasis on landscape and returned to a more abstract approach in his work. Many color and black-and-white paintings from this period are represented on this site.
His style evolved again, incorporating newly discovered techniques for applying acrylic paint. Shaipiro defines this set of works as a metaphorical representation of a pre-matter state with different energetic structures at work – a new kind of landscape.
