Frankfurt a. M.: Querschnitt-Verlag AG, undated [1923]. xvi, 201 pages [5 pages of ads at the end.]. 25cm x 18.2cm. Hardcover with publisher’s yellow cardboard binding with printed boards and spine, black top edge, and black endpapers. No dust jacket. First limited, and numbered edition of this art and literary anthology published by the Querschnitt-Verlag in Frankfurt am Main. It serves as a high-profile artifact of the Weimar Republic's avant-garde scene. This being No. 289 of 400 copies. With contributions (partly original contributions) by Gottfried Benn, Franz Blei, Arnolt Bronnen, Jean Cocteau, O. Coubine, Daumier, Carl Einstein, Alfred Flechtheim, Ivan Goll, Juan Gris, George Grosz, Rudolf Grossmann, Max Hermann-Neisse, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Fernand Léger, Sinclair Lewis, Frans Masereel, Alfred Richard Meyer, Pablo Picasso, Joachim Ringelnatz, Ottomar Starke, Maurice Sterne, Carl Sternheim, Maurice de Vlaminck, H. v. Wedderkop. With numerous illustrations on 8 plates (on thick paper), 25 plates with photographic illustrations on double-sided printed art paper (= 50 pages of images) and illustrations within the text. Contains (original) graphic inserts by Frans Masereel (woodcut, as frontispiece), Daumier (woodcut), Coubine (lithograph), Starke (woodcut) and an (original) woodcut within the pagination by Paresce (page 109). The woodcut of Daumier is inserted twice, once in the text, and once on a smaller light pink sheet (see photos). Texts are in German, English, and French.
Rubbing, bumping, wear, some soiling, and tanning to the boards and spine. The spine is fraying slightly, and the cardboard is chipped off a bit on both ends. . Pen markings on the front board. The plate with the original lithograph by O. Coubine facing page 102 has a crease in the bottom left corner, not affecting the content. Small tear in the outer margin of pages 137-140, not affecting the content. The text is clear, the illustrations are vibrant, the paper is crisp, and the binding is solid. Overall, an attractive copy in very good condition.
