Description from the seller
1. General Information
Artist: Led Zeppelin
Album: Led Zeppelin II
Format: 8-Track Stereo Tape Cartridge
Label: Atlantic
Catalog Number: M 88236
Release Year: 1969 (Original First Issue)
Manufactured by: Ampex, Elk Grove Village, ILL.
Shell Color: Off-white / Cream
2. Description
This is the sought-after 1969 first edition. Unlike later reissues that moved to the "TP" prefix (such as TP 19127), this copy bears the original M 88236 catalog number.
Led Zeppelin II was famously recorded on the fly during the band's 1969 tours across the UK and North America. This 8-track version captures that raw, heavy energy. A notable characteristic of this release is the split of the track "Ramble On" into two parts (Part One and Part Two) across Programs 3 and 4—a technical necessity of the 8-track format to balance the program lengths, which has since become a charming quirk for vintage media enthusiasts.
The cartridge features the iconic "Brown Bomber" artwork on a single-piece wrap-around label and comes housed in the period-correct Atlantic "8" logo black cardboard slipcase.
3. Condition
Cartridge Shell: Near Mint (NM). The off-white shell is in solid condition with no cracks. It shows some light, natural age-related yellowing.
Label: The label is vibrant and fully legible. There is some minor bubbling and lifting around the edges and on the spine, which is very common for Ampex-produced tapes of this era.
Slipcase: Excellent (EX)
Tape/Pads: The tape appears to be in good visual condition. As with most vintage 8-tracks, the original foam pressure pads have hardened/shrunk over time and may require replacement for optimal playback.
4. Notes for Collectors
First Pressing Status: Confirmed by the M 88236 catalog number and the Ampex Elk Grove Village manufacturing credits.
Authenticity: Features the original "Lear Jet Stereo 8" branding molded into the back of the plastic shell.
Tracklist Variation: Includes the unique "Ramble On" split, specific to the 8-track sequencing.
5. Matrix / Labels
Label: White/Orange/Blue Atlantic logo on the front artwork.
Manufacturing Text: "MFD. IN U.S.A. BY AMPEX, ELK GROVE VILLAGE, ILL."
Catalog: M 88236 (Printed on the spine and front label).
