Description from the seller

Wooden sculptures, original kokeshi dolls, 4 pieces, inscribed "Usaburo" and other items, Japanese traditional crafts

- Short description of the item and its origin
Kokeshi dolls originated in the late Edo period (early 19th century) as wooden dolls made as souvenirs in hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region.
Originally a children's toy, their simple designs and hand-painted decorations gradually came to be appreciated, and they developed into a uniquely Japanese folk art.
Later, creative kokeshi dolls were created that emphasized the artist's individuality, and they are also popular as decorative crafts.

Usaburo Kokeshi is a type of creative kokeshi doll that was started by Okamoto Usaburo during the Showa era.
Based on the traditional shape of kokeshi, it incorporates sophisticated shapes and modern designs and has developed into an ornamental craft.
Today, it is known both domestically and internationally as one of the leading brands of creative kokeshi.
