Description from the seller
Prestigious Oval Plate in Embossed Gilded Copper – Scene by Adriaen van Ostade – Lefèvre Devis Manufactory
A decorative work of exceptional quality: a large oval platter in gilded copper, masterfully embossed. The piece represents the perfect blend of great 17th-century Flemish painting and the excellence of 20th-century artistic metalwork.
The Author and the Subject: Adriaen van Ostade
The central decoration is a faithful and detailed transposition in relief of a famous work by Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685), one of the most important masters of the Dutch Golden Age.
The Scene: The work depicts a typical "genre scene" in a tavern. Van Ostade was unsurpassed in capturing the daily life of the time; here, the embossing brings to life the characters, the card players, and the convivial atmosphere typical of his style.
The Signature: On the front of the work is engraved the reference to the original author (see Ostade), confirming the authenticity of the iconographic drawing.
The Manufacture: Lefèvre Devis (L. D.)
The plate is an excellent product of the Lefèvre Devis manufacture, as attested by the initials L. D. punched on the metal.
The company, active in Belgium (home of the refined Dinanderie), specialized in the creation of art objects in noble metals intended for high-end furnishings.
The choice of gilded copper and the precision of the chisel make this piece one of the most sought-after and luxurious productions of the company.
Technical and Construction Features
Material: Copper with original gold plating. The gold finish not only enhances the object, but also protects the copper from oxidation, maintaining its shine over time.
Technique: Embossing and chiseling executed with the highest mastery. Note the depth of the reliefs, which create an almost sculptural perspective effect.
Ornamental Border: A rich frame with baroque scroll motifs, cherubs and phytomorphic decorations encloses the central scene, lending solemnity to the entire composition.
Condition
Period: early 20th century 1920s/30s
Condition: Excellent. The gilding is well preserved and the embossing details are crisp and free of dents.
This piece is ideal for those seeking an object that combines the historical value of a Van Ostade work with the certified quality of a historic manufacturer like Lefèvre Devis. A display piece ready to be hung and admired.
Its dimensions are height 42.5cm width 64.5 depth 3cm.
Professional shipping and packaging.
