Description from the seller
UV checked!
Lidded box with side handles
Polychrome enameled porcelain
China
End of the 19th century, probably workshops in Canton, Guangzhou.
Height: 13 cm
Width with handles: 15 cm
Diameter approx. 10.5 cm
Small porcelain-covered box resting on a ring foot, with a slightly flared body and two lateral handles molded in the shape of curved ears. The domed lid, with a rounded top knob embellished with gold, follows the profile of the body.
The decoration, painted with polychrome enamels on glaze, is organized into reserved cartouches framed by emerald-green and pink foliate scrollwork.
A main panel depicts an interior scene with figures (ladies and children) treated in the Cantonese narrative style. The other cartouches feature birds, peonies, fruits and flowering branches, symbols of abundance and prosperity.
The vibrant palette of green, pink, iron-red, and yellow, with gilded accents and dense ornamentation, is characteristic of the so-called Canton export productions, intended for the Western market at the end of the Qing dynasty.
Likely function:
Sugar box, teapot, small trinket box, or domestic incense box.
Condition :
Overall good condition. Minor wear to the gilding. Small chip to the lip. No restoration visible. Examined under UV light.
Provenance: Portuguese Collection - Kanaka The Collection
