Created by the artist E. Perez Lezcano
“Map of a Gaze” is presented as a portrait turned into territory. The work does not seek to describe a face, but to cartograph it: each plane acts as a region with its own light, temperature, and emotional weight. The gaze, enlarged and frontal, almost like a symbol, functions as a center of gravity and a point of orientation; it does not merely observe the external world, it also organizes and rewrites it from within. The portrait thus becomes an intimate map: a system of borders, thresholds, and steps where identity and memory appear as architecture.
The composition is built from fragments that fit together precisely, within a language close to figurative Neo-Cubism: vertical cuts, facets, curves, and blocks that interrupt continuity to create simultaneity. There is a deliberate play between profile and frontal view, as if the face contained several positions at once. That tension is heightened by elements that function as signals within the map: asymmetrical eyes, a dark arch serving as an eyebrow or bridge, a hand appearing as a support; all of which suggests that perception and thought are also constructed in layers and along multiple paths.
Color sustains the reading as if it were a cartographic legend. The water greens, turquoise, and blues cool and expand the space, generating a serene and cerebral atmosphere; the ochres, yellows, and corals introduce focal points of energy, like illuminated areas or points of emotional pressure. The contrasts are not decorative: they mark boundaries, open passages, and define zones of silence and zones of presence. Light appears modulated by planes, not by classic volume; depth arises from the relationship between temperatures and the way each surface pushes or recedes.
The acrylic brushwork feels restrained and deliberate, alternating cleaner fields with subtle transitions that let the material breathe. That combination reinforces the idea of a map: a structural drawing that orders, and a painting that pulses. Taken together, “Map of a Gaze” offers a slow contemplation: the viewer does not recognize a face; they move across it; and in that journey they understand that looking, in this work, is also about building a world.
