Two mid‑20th‑century onyx and gilded metal smoking accessories, an ashtray and a table lighter, each with a 10 cm width and 3.5 cm depth, made in France or Italy and dating from around 1940–1960.
Description from the seller
The objects are a matching ashtray and table lighter, made from onyx (or onyx marble) combined with gilded metal (likely bronze with gold plating).
Ashtray:
A shallow onyx bowl with a warm, creamy translucence, mounted on an ornate gilded metal base. The base is sculpted with two classical cherub/putti figures standing back-to-back and supporting the bowl, ending in a fluted, shell-like foot. The rim is decorated with a finely detailed metal band and cigarette rests.
Lighter:
A matching onyx bowl-shaped body on a gilded metal pedestal base. The lighter mechanism sits discreetly on top, framed by a decorative metal collar that echoes the ashtray’s rim. The proportions and materials clearly indicate it was designed as a set with the ashtray. The lighter needs to be filled with gas.
Together, they form an elegant smoking set, intended for display as much as for use.
Style
Neoclassical revival, with strong influence from Louis XVI / Empire-inspired decorative motifs
The cherubs (putti), symmetry, and classical pedestal forms are typical of historicist luxury objects, rather than modernist design
This is not Art Deco (which would be more geometric), but instead leans toward ornamental classicism.
Period (approximate)
Most likely mid-20th century, approximately:
1940s–1960s
During this period, there was a strong market for:
decorative smoking accessories
classical revival designs
onyx + gilt metal luxury items for living rooms and salon.
Origin / Production
Very likely produced in France or Italy, possibly:
France: known for luxury smoking sets and classical bronzes
Italy: widely produced onyx and gilt decorative objects for export.
