Description from the seller

Large solid walnut altar cross with Christ in polychrome ceramic – France, mid-19th century
century

Impressive altar cross made of solid walnut, characterized by a solid architectural structure and an elegant molded base with a sinuous profile. The woodwork reveals a warm, deep patina, aged over time, with decorative brass inserts that enrich the composition, imparting greater refinement and dramatic presence.
The Christ is sculpted in polychrome ceramic, with accurate anatomical rendering and delicate chromatic rendering, typical of nineteenth-century production in the French milieu. The face, intensely expressive, is tilted with natural ease, while the loincloth, treated in pinkish tones, introduces a chromatic element of strong visual balance. The original polychromy, still luminous, helps convey an emotionally devotional reading of great impact.
The cross, in terms of size and design, is clearly intended for liturgical altar use, and today it is an object of strong decorative and collectible value, suitable for both religious contexts and interiors of a historical or eclectic character.
Attributed to the mid-19th century, with a strong likelihood of French manufacture, the work represents a significant example of nineteenth-century sacred furnishings, in which structural solidity, sculptural sensibility, and devotional function coexist.
