A fine walnut box circa 1900 in solid mahogany with multicolour geometric Tunbridge intarsia, measuring 30.5 × 22.5 × 15 cm and sold in good used condition with a working original key from France.
Description from the seller
Mahogany collection box with multicolored geometric inlays in Tunbridge style.
France, late 19th century
Important collectible box of French manufacture, dating to the late 19th century, made of solid mahogany and enriched with refined polychrome geometric inlays in the Tunbridge style, obtained by juxtaposing carefully selected precious wood timbers.
The decoration, marked by great complexity and precise workmanship, runs along the lid and the sides with geometric motifs that create a perspective and three-dimensional effect, entirely attributable to the Tunbridge ornamental style of the late 19th century, reserved for high-end objects meant for elegant interiors and private collections.
The mahogany surface features a deep, vibrant grain, enhanced by an authentic patina aged over time, which gives the whole a warm and noble character.
The lid, harmoniously domed, is enhanced by a central inlaid panel that interacts with the surrounding decorative bands, creating a formal balance of great refinement. The structure appears solid, well-proportioned, and coherent with high-quality production.
The interior is lined with padded red silk, elegant and striking, designed to hold precious objects, documents, or jewelry.
The original key is present and perfectly functional: the box opens and closes with precision, a sign of sound mechanics and excellent build quality.
The object comes from an ancient Parisian residence, a detail that reinforces its charm, provenance, and collecting interest.
