Set of two hard-paste porcelain pieces from Sèvres, France, comprising a cup and matching saucer in a deep cobalt-blue ground with gilding and polychrome enamel floral motifs; cup height 4.5 cm, saucer diameter 12.5 cm, dating to 1773 with underglaze blue Sèvres mark and the letter U, possibly decorator Jean-Pierre Boulanger, with age-related wear and gilding wear.

Cup and Saucer
Sèvres, France, 1773
Of rounded form, the cup with a slightly flared rim. Decorated with a deep cobalt-blue ground, richly enhanced with gilding, and finely painted floral motifs in polychrome enamel colours within white reserves.
The underside bears the Sèvres factory mark in underglaze blue, together with the letter U indicating the year 1773. Also present is the mark B, possibly attributable to the decorator Jean-Pierre Boulanger (père), and three dots associated with
Tandart, active at Sèvres between circa 1754 and 1800. An incised cross mark is present.

Cup: height approx. 4.5 cm
Saucer: height approx. 3 cm; diameter approx. 12.5 cm
Age-related wear consistent with age. Some wear to the gilding. Overall in pleasing condition.

Jean-Pierre Boulanger (père)
Born in 1722, Jean-Pierre Boulanger worked as a gilder at the Sèvres manufactory from 1754 until 1785. He began his career at Saint-Cloud before moving to Vincennes in July 1754. He was married to Marianne Cron. One of their sons, Jean-Marie Robert (also known as Vincent), was active as a painter at the manufactory between 1778 and 1781.
