Ancient Baroque Wooden Statue of St. Virgil of Salzburg, Bishop of Salzburg (circa 17th–18th century)

This fine polychrome and gilded wooden sculpture depicts Saint Virgil, identified by the inscription visible on the base.

Details of the Work

Subject: Saint Virgil of Salzburg, abbot and bishop known as "the geometer".

Style and Era: The work is attributable to the Baroque period, with stylistic features typical of the Alpine region, particularly Tyrol or Austria, dating probably to the 17th or 18th century.

Materials and Technique: Wood carving, with rich polychromy and gilding in a Mission style.

Iconography: The saint is depicted in episcopal vestments (miter and golden cope), with a book in the left hand to emphasize his erudition, and the right hand raised in a gesture of blessing.
