Het lelijke jonge eendje, with text and lithographs by Theo van Hoytema, is a first Dutch edition published in 1893 by Lankhout, Den Haag, in a hardback binding measuring 48 by 36 cm, consisting of 31 colour plates mounted on cardboard with the front cover bearing a Hoytema design and the word proefexemplaar, the original language being Dutch and the work in Goed condition.

The Ugly Duckling. After a fairy tale by H. Andersen - drawn and lithographed by Theo van Hoytema - C.M. Van Gogh, Amsterdam, 1893. Printed at S. Lankhout C°, The Hague - Hardcover with a black and red drawing by T. van Hoytema on the front cover, in which the word "proefexemplaar" (proof copy) appears between T. van Hoytema's initials - 48 x 36 cm. - 31 plates, glued on cardboard.
The book "The Ugly Duckling," drawn and lithographed by Theo van Hoytema in 1893, is a unique edition of Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale. This edition is known for its beautiful, lifelike lithographs in subdued colors and typical Art Nouveau/Jugendstil lines. Van Hoytema himself drew the text within the illustrations, making this edition particularly unique. Van Hoytema, a renowned Dutch lithographer (1863-1917), depicted the story in 31 colored plates, with minimal text.
Condition: The cover is scuffed and loose from the interior. A trace of old moisture is visible in the lower right corner, outside the drawings. The pasted-in lithographs are in good condition and retain their color. Only the last page is missing a corner, outside the drawing. See also the photos. All plates were photographed.
