AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This wonderful hand-carved deer mask from Bhutan was personally purchased by me in Thimphu. The antlers can be removed.

In Bhutan there is the following legend about the mask:
The deer is the first living being to have embraced Buddhism even before humans. It was hunted by a hunter and sought refuge with the Buddha, who sat and meditated under the Bodhi tree, shortly before he attained enlightenment.

This mask thus represents the very beginnings of Buddhism and therefore holds special significance in Bhutan.
