AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Author: After, Isaac Levitan (1860-1900)
Title: Nocturne
Year: Dated in the lower right margin 1915
Technique: oil on canvas
Dimensions: 52 by 40 cm with frame.

Isaak Ilich Levitán (Kybartai, 1861 - Moscow, 1900) was a Russian painter who belonged to the Peredvizhniki. He expressed in his landscapes the beauty of the Volga region.
When young, Levitan received a notable influence from Corot, which he managed to transfer with profound earthbound feeling to the Russian landscape and its idiosyncrasy. Upon returning to his country he began to work feverishly and many dared to say that no one could feel the soul of the Russian landscape as Levitan did, who only cultivated that pictorial genre. He is currently regarded at the apex of Russian landscape painting of the nineteenth century because, moreover, in his plein air painting he captured with a light brushstroke and admirable realism the subtle gradations of the dense sunlight and the fine color layers of the shadows.
