Turtles, freshwater turtles, and land turtles or Chelonians (Order: Testudines) are among the most endangered species on the planet. For centuries, the larger species have been hunted and traded for their shells, meat, and eggs. In Southeast Asia, the size of these ancient creatures ranges from small, mysterious freshwater turtles that hide in muddy forest streams to giant sea turtles measuring up to 2 meters in length, navigating around the globe.

Today, about 300 Chelonien species exist, of which around 80 are in Southeast Asia.
