【Title】
黒漆塗菊秋草文金蒔絵硯箱 Exquisite Large Japanese Gold Maki-e Lacquer Suzuri-bako (Writing Box) – Chrysanthemum & Autumn Grasses – Meiji–Taishō Period (25.5 cm)
⸻
【Description】
A magnificent example of Japanese lacquer artistry from the late Meiji to early Taishō period.
This impressive large Suzuri-bako (writing box) features a deep black urushi lacquer ground, richly adorned with opulent gold Maki-e (sprinkled gold powder) decoration.
The lid depicts an elegant and poetic scene of “Kiku” (chrysanthemums) and “Nadeshiko” (dianthus) growing alongside a traditional bamboo fence. The design is executed with exceptional refinement, incorporating subtle raised details in Taka Maki-e, creating both depth and visual harmony.
Inside, the box retains its original gold-rimmed inkstone (suzuri) and a finely crafted metal water dropper (suiteki) in the form of a chrysanthemum, beautifully complementing the exterior motif and demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship throughout.
⸻
【Condition】
Very good antique condition.
The gold Maki-e decoration on the lid remains vibrant and exceptionally well preserved. Minor surface scratches and age-related wear are visible on the underside (as shown in the photographs). There is also slight lacquer loss along some edges, entirely consistent with the age and use of an authentic antique piece.
※ There is a scuff mark where the inkstone rests. It does not affect usage. Please see the image.
