DESCRIPTION: I present to you a large-format book measuring 37 x 23 cm, and weighing 4 kg, published in Lyon in the year of Our Lord 1683, and therefore 343 years old.

Our enormous book contains the “COMMENTARIUS IN SACRAM SCRIPTURAM (”Commentary on the Holy Scriptures” ),” a work in two volumes, here bound together in a single volume, that extensively covers both the Old and the New Testament.

Its author was Jacobus Tirinus (1580–1636), a Jesuit monk, theologian, and Belgian biblical scholar born in Antwerp, who represents a type of seventeenth-century scholar who combines theological rigor with an interest in classical and geographical learning. His biblical commentaries were valued, cited, and reprinted well into the eighteenth century.

STATUS: Original full marbled leather binding, overall good condition, with some scuffs and small losses, as shown in the photos. Spine with six raised bands, decorated with gold motifs inspired by flora and the title of the work in gold lettering.

The interior is in good overall condition, as the photos show. Notable: in the first volume, the title page of the first volume, the first preliminaries leaf, and significant omissions (up to half) in the 3 or 4 fold-out tables originally present are missing; in the second volume, the last two index leaves are missing. Otherwise, a fairly complete textual work spanning the two volumes that comprise it.
