Bronze amulet depicting a seated Buddha in meditation from Lan Na, Thailand; dimensions 17 × 8.5 × 4.5 cm; non-signed, without a stand, in good condition, with a visible crack at the rear of the base.
Description from the seller
Buddha amulet, seated in meditation
Kingdom of Lan Na, Northern Thailand, 17th century
Bronze with brown and green patina, traces of natural mineralization
Dimensions: 17 × 8.5 × 4.5 cm
A small depiction of the Buddha seated in meditation, legs crossed in padmāsana, hands joined in dhyāna mudrā, a posture characteristic of spiritual concentration and inner enlightenment.
The image presents the stylistic traits typical of Lan Na art, with a slender silhouette, soft shoulders, an oval face with half-closed lids, a straight nose, thin lips sketching a slight smile, long ears stretched, and hair styled in tight little curls crowned by a flame.
The monastic robe, simply indicated by a slight diagonal drape, underscores the sober elegance characteristic of the sculpture from northern Thailand between the 16th and 17th centuries. The hollow casting and the thick base correspond to traditional regional techniques.
The surface retains a nuanced antique patina, blending dark brown with red oxides (cuprite) and green oxides (malachite), evidencing natural aging and mineralization of the bronze.
Condition: crack visible at the back of the base. General surface wear. Old patina with mineral concretions (cuprite and malachite). Small casting irregularities and internal deposits visible beneath the base. Overall stable.
Provenance: Portuguese Collection - Kanaka The Collection
