Biography
Ettore Frana
He was born in Sestri Ponente (Genoa) in 1923. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Genoa and the Istituto Maragliano in the same city. He devoted more than a decade to teaching drawing and painting in public and private schools.
Since 1946 he has exhibited in countless regional and national exhibitions. Angelo Valcarenghi describes Frana's work in these terms: “His most recurring subjects, and the ones that identify him most in the collective imagination of collectors, are the gozzi of Ligurian fishermen, beached on beaches warmed by the morning sun, bronzed by the noonday sun and inflamed by the sunset, most often without human presence, almost to emphasize the desire for peace after storms, the rest after fatigue, the search for serenity of the spirit in a silence that is not deaf, not grim but magical and restorative. But among his preferred subjects Frana includes the boats and tugboats of the port and in the port, corners of the Ligurian hinterland such as orchards, vineyards, trees in bloom or inflamed by the colors of autumn that surround and almost hide rustic farmhouses, all told and built with a sure, swift stroke, without hesitation, precisely of one who is extremely master of technique and, in pastoral subjects, with a robust sign and bearing freed from conditioning of a descriptive type in favor of painting freedom, chromatic freedom and the construction of the image, telltale signs of the postwar painting world.”}
Angelo Valcarenghi thus continues: "He is known as >, and this is extremely limiting for a painter who has at his disposal, in his technical repertoire and in his artistic sensibility, a wealth and multiplicity of resources not easily found among other painters."
