n°1 Title "THEY OPENED WAYS BETWEEN WEST AND EAST" (Hanno aperto rotte tra Occidente e Oriente), highlighting the global connectivity offered by the airline. The image is part of a thematic series on travel or world cultures by the Danish artist Otto Nielsen (1916-2000) known for his painterly style and for having created numerous posters and promotional materials for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System, the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden). Year 1959. The poster features an artistic depiction of jet airliners of the era, including the Douglas DC-8C, the Coronado 990 and the Caravelle, mentioned in the text below.
No. 2 Title "MARCO POLO'S TRAVEL THROUGH ASIA"; The work features an abstract expressionist style, with vivid colors and a visual emphasis on the destination, often including a small airplane in the sky. The poster depicts, in a vibrant and stylized way, Marco Polo's journey through Asia, as indicated by the text at the bottom left.
No. 3 Title "First Round-the-World Expedition, led by Magellan"; The work presents Nielsen's distinctive, loose oil painting style, with sketches and abstract figures on a bright orange background, evoking a sense of adventure. A small airplane from SAS is often included in these posters, high in the sky.
The illustration commemorates the first voyage around the world led by Ferdinand Magellan (who died during the voyage; his crew completed the circumnavigation).
No. 4 Title "Nordenskiöld's Expedition" the image illustrates Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld's expedition through the North-East Passage ("Nordenskiold's Expedition Through the North-East Passage"); Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld (1832-1901), Swedish-Finnish geologist and explorer, led the expedition that for the first time managed to navigate the entire North-East Passage (along the northern coast of Europe and Asia) and to circumnavigate the Eurasian continent. The undertaking was completed aboard the steamship Vega between 1878 and 1880, and is regarded as a monumental scientific and maritime achievement for the era.
No. 5 Title "South-East Passage" poster depicts the opening of the Cape of Good Hope route by Vasco da Gama, also known as the "South-East Passage".
The work is characterized by an abstract, vibrant style, with splashes of color that convey the energy and movement of maritime exploration.
No. 6 Title "Bering Strait Discovered by Vitus Bering (Stretto di Bering scoperto da Vitus Bering)"; it is an abstract and colorful illustration of posters published around 1961-1964. The artist used a relaxed and evocative oil-painting style, which translated into these lithographic prints with vibrant colors and a Scandinavian aesthetic
