Description from the seller
Large wall crucifix with Christ – Ebonized wood and sculpture in wood, plaster and papier-mâché – Late 19th century
Impressive wall crucifix with remarkable visual presence and strong devotional impact, crafted in ebonized wood and enhanced by a sculpture of Christ with excellent plasticity and expressiveness.
The figure of the Crucifix presents a wooden core, subsequently modeled with plaster and papier-masté, a technique widely used between the late 19th century and the early 20th century to achieve realistic effects and great emotional intensity. The body is characterized by precise modeling, with well-proportioned anatomy, flowing drapery, and an intensely expressive face, typical of late 19th-century devotional production.
The cross, finely shaped with trilobed terminals, is finished with dark ebonization, which creates an elegant contrast with the warm, patinated tone of the Christ. The overall piece conveys a strong character, suitable for both private interiors and collectors’ contexts or historical-style furnishings.
