Hélène Planquelle is a self-taught contemporary figurative painter whose work explores the delicate balance between pleasure and suffering in our relationship with others, from both an individual and a collective perspective, through recurring themes such as emotional dependence, attachment, vulnerability, acceptance and rejection, violence, and power dynamics.
Although figurative, his work is conceptual by nature, and draws on a rich bed of philosophical, literary, and scientific references, in fields ranging from ethics to the social sciences, including attachment theory and evolutionary psychology.
The title of each series, most often a quotation (literary, poetic or philosophical), allows a play of echoes between each work, thus opening up the field of possible interpretations for the viewer.
