(*) Andrew Warhola (Pittsburgh; 6. August 1928 – New York; 22. Februar 1987), commonly known as Andy Warhol, was an American visual artist and filmmaker who played a crucial role in the birth and development of Pop Art. After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde cinema, and literature, a fame supported by a deft handling of the media and his role as the guru of modernity. Warhol served as a bridge between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians, and colorful urban characters. Among his influences are: Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom of Finland, and Jack Smith.
Warhol used a variety of media to create his works, including drawing by hand, painting, printmaking, photography, silkscreen, sculpture, film, and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, houses an extensive permanent art collection. It is, by coincidence, the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
During his lifetime, he was a controversial figure—some critics described his works as pretentious or as mischief—and since his death in 1987 he has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, analyses, books, and documentaries. Apart from fame and controversy, he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century due to his revolutionary works.
