Description from the seller
Very fine copy of the Elegies of Propertius, a major Latin poet of the Augustan era, in the famous translation by Charles-Pierre Boudot de Longchamps. This 1772 edition is sought after for the elegance of its typography and the quality of its critical apparatus.
Prestigious provenance: This copy is enriched by a magnificent ex-libris engraved by J. Dupont for the library of the Kühnholtz-Lordat family. A Montpellier family of scholars and bibliophiles, Achille Kühnholtz (son-in-law of the astronomer Delambre) was notably the curator of the Library of the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier. A mark of serious provenance for any collector.
A classic eighteenth-century work, elegantly bound and endowed with an interesting pedigree.
Binding: Full antique marbled calf. Spine with five raised bands richly ornamented with gold-tooled panels bearing floral motifs. Title label in burgundy morocco. Gilt fillets on the edges, red edges.
Condition :
◦ Binding: Good decorative appearance. Wear to the spine ends (small losses at the head and tail) and corners slightly blunted. Boards sound despite some minor scuffs.
◦ Interior: Clean and well preserved. Presence of scattered foxing and browning typical for an 18th-century paper, not affecting readability.
• Pagination: Complete for the preliminary discourse and the text (391 pages + table).
