Description from the seller
Seated Buddha in Meditation
Laos, late 18th–19th century
Bronze
Height 29 cm × 12.5 × 11.5
3 kg
This sculpture represents the Buddha seated in a meditative posture, legs crossed in the lotus position (padmāsana). The right hand descends in a bhūmisparśa mudrā (earth witness gesture), while the left hand rests on the knees, palm facing upward. This iconography refers to the founding episode of Awakening, when the Buddha calls the earth to witness his victory over Māra.
The work here reflects a regional production from local workshops, distinct from the grand royal commissions or major urban centers.
The body displays elongated proportions and softly articulated shoulders, partly covered by the monastic robe whose sleeve crosses the left shoulder in a smooth, discreet band. The sobriety of the modeling contrasts with the ornamental treatment of the triangular base with rounded corners, decorated with finely engraved vegetal motifs. This massive pedestal, integrated into the casting, is characteristic of certain regional productions.
The face, atypical, stands out for its pronounced elongation and stretched oval. Closed eyes, a broad nose, and a slight smile give the whole an inward, meditative expression. The right nipple, deliberately marked and prominent, along with the large hands with stylized fingers, contribute to a direct and expressive formal language. These elements, associated with the three horizontal folds of the neck, are characteristic of Lao ethnic craftsmanship, where the simplification of volumes and the emphasis of certain features prevail over a naturalistic rendering.
Condition:
Good overall condition. The patina, a deep, nuanced dark brown, reveals ancient oxidation. Small ancient lacunae on the throne. Small crack at the level of the right hand. Break and loss of the flame on the head
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection (sent with certificate of authenticity)
