Historical Grandeur in Bronze
Up for auction: a beautifully preserved commemorative medal of the legendary Weltflug (world flight) of the LZ 127 "Graf Zeppelin" in 1929. This piece is not only a tribute to one of the greatest achievements in aviation history, but also an iconic example of early 20th-century medal art.
The Design
The medal was designed by the renowned Berlin sculptor Eberhard Encke (1881–1936), whose work is known for its strong, stylized forms.
• Front: An impressive, dynamic depiction of the Graf Zeppelin hovering over the globe, surrounded by the text: "GRAF ZEPPELIN – WELTFLUG 1929".
• Reverse: A symbolic representation of a naked male figure (possibly Atlas or a personification of the wind/victory) who defies the forces of nature, with the artist's signature and the foundry stamp: "E. ENCKE FEC. – BHR. LOESCH / BERLIN".
