Description from the seller

Subject: Russian Orthodox icon

The object is a Russian Orthodox feast-day icon (also called a prazdnik), presumably dating from the 19th century, with original back boards. Authentic aging cracks and corner damage, otherwise untouched. This type of icon depicts the main events of the church's liturgical year.
Main features
Central image: In the middle is depicted the Resurrection of Christ. It is often combined with the 'Descent into Hell' (Anastasis), in which Christ frees the souls of the righteous, such as Adam and Eve.
The Twelve Great Feasts: Around the central panel, twelve smaller scenes are depicted that represent the most important Christian holidays.
Materials and techniques: These icons are traditionally made with egg tempera (pigment mixed with yolk) on a wooden panel, often with a layer of gesso (chalk ground).
Depicted scenes
Although the exact layout per icon may vary, the twelve side panels usually contain scenes such as:
The birth of the Mother Gods.
The Annunciation (the announcement to Mary).
The birth of Christ.
The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.
The entry into Jerusalem.
The Ascension of Christ.
The Dormition of the Mother of God (the Assumption of Mary).
