Description from the seller
Anton Nicolaas Marie (Ton) Karssen (1945–2019) was a Dutch painter, born in The Hague and later active in Rotterdam. He came from a family with a long tradition of painters and art dealers. He painted in several styles, but became best known as a copyist of the Dutch Romantic School, with landscapes and cityscapes in the style of, among others, Charles Leickert, Cornelis Springer, and Andreas Schelfhout. His detailed Old Dutch winter landscapes with skaters enjoyed particular popularity, also internationally. Additionally, he worked in an impressionistic style, inspired by the Hague School, and painted mainly sunny seaside scenes of Scheveningen. Karssen was active as a painter from around 1960 to 2019, moved to Rotterdam in 1973, and signed his work as A. Karssen or A.N.M. Karssen.
His work was exhibited and sold internationally, including in the United States, Australia, Germany, and Belgium, and he won a public prize in Perth. In addition to his own artistry, he also taught painting, including to Jan Hendrik Jacob Jasper. Including a certificate of authenticity from a sworn appraiser.
This is a masterwork by the painter, a cityscape rendered in detail.
