Description from the seller
Ariosto. Orlando Furioso, a heroic poem, translated by A.-J. du Pays and illustrated by Gustave Doré. Paris, Hachette, 1879. Folio edition, XII-658pp. 618 drawings wood-engraved or reproduced by the Gillot process, including the frontispiece and 81 plates. Gustave Doré, for this edition of Orlando Furioso, did not use the means he was accustomed to employ. He did not draw everything on wood; he made pen drawings that were reproduced by the Gillotage process, a method that preserves the original drawings.
Red percaline bound book with gold, signed Albert Souze, smooth spine titled and adorned with a rich decoration of a griffin bearing a shield on spears and a knight’s helmet with a lion’s plumes on the front cover. Abundantly illustrated by Gustave Doré.
Condition: Few foxing spots (front matter and first pages), corners slightly bumped, but the book has always been covered with a plastic protector, which gives it a good appearance. There were, however, humidity damage at the end of the volume, see the photos, but these mainly affect the table of contents and the endnotes.
The cover is solid. The book is very heavy (9 kg) and requires shipping costs and sturdy packaging.
