Description from the seller
Beautiful and large statuette depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Excellent condition
Manufactured in the 1990s by Atelier Haenecour (Belgium)
Saint Catherine of Alexandria is an iconic figure in Christendom, celebrated on November 25.
Virgin and martyr of the early 4th century, she is renowned for her erudition and her resistance to Emperor Maxentius.
Born in Alexandria around 290, she was of great beauty and exceptional intelligence.
She is said to have triumphed over fifty pagan scholars sent by the emperor to confound her, ultimately converting them to Christianity.
Condemned to the torture of a spiked wheel, the instrument miraculously broke at her touch. She was ultimately beheaded.
She is traditionally depicted with a cogwheel (often broken), a sword, a book (symbol of her knowledge), and the palm branch of martyrdom.
Patron saint: She protects philosophers, students, schoolchildren, as well as trades that use a wheel (millers, wheelwrights).
Tradition of the "Catherinettes": In France, she is the patroness of 25-year-old single women, who wear on that day extravagant hats in yellow and green.
His tomb is said to lie at the famous Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, one of the oldest Christian monasteries still active.
