Dall'angoscia alla speranza by René Burri, signed on the front matter, 148 pages, Italian first edition from 2004, published by Università della Svizzera Italiana, softcover, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
exceptionally signed and dedicated on the frontispiece by René Burri (1933-2014), unique and unobtainable as a signed copy on the Internet. 148 pages and about a hundred black-and-white photographs, text in Italian by biologist Albert Jacquard. Paperback cover with wide flaps, illustrated (without dustjacket as issued). In excellent condition.
Usually the texts of photobooks accompany the photographs themselves. Here it is the reverse: the photographs by René Burri accompany the text. This book was published by the Academy of Architecture of the University of the Italian-speaking Switzerland, which invited the biologist Albert Jacquard to participate in an interdisciplinary reflection. The goal of this book is to encourage architects in particular, but not only them, to first think about the humans who will live in the constructions. Human ecology thus means first harmony between humans and their environment as well as harmony among humans themselves. Albert Jacquart (Jacquard) here conveys with illuminating lucidity the state of humanity at the dawn of this new millennium, its anxieties, concerns, joys, dramas, contradictions and hopes, mentioning with precision the errors we are currently making. Man must learn to see himself as an element of the cosmos in order to realize a project for the future.
The photographs by René Burri illustrate Jacquart’s reflection here. Burri studied at the applied arts school in his hometown of Zurich, Switzerland. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a documentary filmmaker and began using a Leica during his military service. Burri became an associate of Magnum in 1955. In 1956 he traveled across Europe and the Middle East, then went to Latin America, where he produced a series on the Gauchos that was published by the magazine Du in 1959. It was also for this Swiss periodical that he photographed artists such as Picasso, Giacometti and Le Corbusier. He became a full member of Magnum in 1959, and began working on his book Die Deutschen published in Switzerland in 1962, and at Robert Delpire the following year with the title Les Allemands. In 1963, while working in Cuba, he photographed Ernesto “Che” Guevara during an interview with an American journalist. His images of the famous revolutionary with his cigar have traveled the world. A major retrospective of his work was organized in 2004-2005 at the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris and shown in many other European museums. (festivalduregard.fr)
