Klaus Prior (born 1945 in Wesel, Germany) is a Swiss sculptor, painter and draftsman.
Born in the year of Germany’s defeat and Europe’s liberation from the National Socialist terror regime. Raised in the rubble-strewn wasteland of a small-town in the Rhineland, Klaus Prior grew up in a society that, oblivious to history, did not confront its past.
Klaus Prior belonged to the later-born generation who could not come to terms with the perpetrators’ generation’s evasion of guilt and the erasure of the past.
When the freshly built economic wonderland called him to arms or to military service, when the so-called call-up order had been issued, he fled the country. He did not go, like so many conscientious objectors, to West Berlin, but moved to Switzerland.
Switzerland was at that time the better country for many artists, the land where one was not surrounded by old Nazis and antisemitists. It was much easier to breathe there, and one could create in peace.
In 1967 he begins studying painting at the School of Applied Arts St. Gallen. Three years later he relocates as a freelance artist to Ticino. Klaus Prior engages with wood sculpture, iron casting, and painting. Since then he has lived and worked in Ticino.
Klaus Prior's theme is the human figure. In the 1980s, beside painting, he increasingly turned to sculpture as well. The sculptures, mostly made of wood and primarily carved with a chainsaw, are seen as similar to the works that emerged in the 1980s by Baselitz and A.R. Penck, as well as to the wooden sculptures by Balkenhol or Hans Scheib.
Since 2008 he has focused strongly on painting, bronze and iron sculptures, as well as works for public spaces.
Numerous exhibitions and participation in exhibitions in various European countries.
