Description from the seller
Artwork Name: Namahage (生剥鬼)
Artist: Unknown
Paper Size: 22.5 × 27.8 cm (8.9 × 10.9 in)
Medium: Woodblock Print
Material: Washi (和紙)
This vibrant modern woodblock print, created approximately in the 1960s–1970s, depicts the famous folk ritual of Namahage (生剥鬼) from Akita Prefecture in northeastern Japan.
The artwork features two strikingly colored Namahage figures: the one on the left is red, and the one on the right is green. Both have large, round eyes, prominent fangs, and golden straw-like hair, closely matching the traditional costumes worn during the Namahage Festival in Oga City, Akita. The left figure holds a large knife and carries a small wooden bucket at its waist, implements said to be used in the ritual to “scold” lazy children. The right figure wields a trident-like staff, another iconic implement of the Namahage ceremony.
The background is a deep blue sky dotted with white circles, representing snowflakes in the winter night, placing the scene within the New Year’s Eve context of the festival. Executed with bold flat colors and strong graphic lines, this piece exemplifies modern folk print style, preserving the mystery of traditional folklore while exuding a charming, naive appeal.
The red seal in the lower left corner bears the artist’s signature, “Hinanae (日苗),” likely the artist’s pen name or art name.
With age, the washi paper shows minor oxidation and yellowing. Overall, the condition is good.
This print is sold unframed. The photo is for display purposes only to show the framed effect.
