Description from the seller
General Tariff, or Regulation of the Duties
Vienna, Giuseppe Gerold, 1776
A very rare and significant eighteenth‑century edition of the General Tariff of Customs of the Habsburg Empire, the official text promulgated under the authority of the Regal Apostolic Majesty, Imperial Majesty, fundamental for regulating trade and taxation in the vast territories subject to the Crown.
Printed in Vienna at Giuseppe Gerold, imperial and university printer, the work was translated into Italian for use in the Imperial Empire’s Italian territories and in the Austrian Littoral, taking on a central role in the customs and mercantile practices of the eighteenth century.
The volume also features an alphabetical arrangement of goods—oils, precious metals, textiles, skins, foodstuffs, manufactured goods and consumer products—with precise indications of duties, weights, measures, and transit tariffs, establishing itself as a primary source of exceptional historical and economic value.
An exceptionally important document for understanding the commercial and fiscal dynamics of Central Europe and the pre-unification Italian territories, the General Tariff represents a cornerstone of Habsburg economic legislation in the Enlightenment era.
24×20cm; pp. 160
An uncommon work on the market, sought after by collectors of books on economics and law, scholars of the history of commerce and taxation, and enthusiasts of Habsburg history and of the Italian territories before unification.
