Description from the seller
MM-MADONNA
In this painting, the figure of Marilyn Monroe is transfigured into a contemporary icon of secular devotion. The bowed face, the hands joined in prayer, and the blue and red mantle of the Marian tradition construct an image that instantly recalls Western sacred painting, yet subverts its codes from within.
Marilyn is not represented here as a seductive diva, but as a vulnerable and consecrated body. The dark glasses — an iconic element and at the same time a barrier — introduce a distance: the gaze is not offered to the viewer, but withdrawn, protected. Holiness does not look; it meditates. It does not seduce, it resists.
On the body, signs of the present emerge: tattoos, pop symbols, childish and commercial elements that coexist with the cross and with the attitude of prayer. The presence of Hello Kitty, butterflies, and insects introduces an ambiguous dimension, suspended between innocence, metamorphosis, and biological fragility. Nothing is decorative: every sign is a stratification of meaning, a cultural scar.
The painting gesture remains steady, figurative, almost classical, while the content moves on a critical and contemporary plane. The work questions the human need to sacralize images and suggests that, in our time, pop icons have assumed the role that once belonged to saints: figures to worship, consume, sacrifice.
This Marilyn-Madonna does not seek veneration or scandal. It asks for silence. It is a work that speaks of displaced faith, of altered devotion, of a sacred thing that has not disappeared but has changed its face.
A work with strong symbolic impact, aimed at collectors who pay attention to contemporary figurative painting and to the dialogue between spirituality, pop culture, and image criticism.
