Before joining the staff of the publishing house ACME in 1989, Sommacal worked as an illustrator for some local newspapers; for ACME, he drew comic stories for the series Cattivik and Lupo Alberto. For Il Giornalino, together with Cominelli, he created the series Zia Agatha in 1990, and with texts by Piero Lusso, the series 'Contatti'. Also with Piero Lusso, for the magazine 'L'Isola che non c'è', he conceived the series featuring the character Yellow Kill in 1996.
In 2000, he began collaborating with Mondadori, illustrating the covers of a series of children's books called 'Ridere', and in 2006, for Bonelli, he created two episodes of the series Demian with Luigi Piccatto. He then joined the staff of illustrators for the series Adam Wild.
He illustrated the book 'Bestiacce' for EDT Giralangolo.
For SBAM COMICS editions, they published 'Contatti' and 'Rapa & Nui'.
