Rectangular lacquered wooden tray finished in brown with a gold maki-e design showing three birds fluttering among drooping willow branches, dimensions 25.8 × 24.8 cm and height 2.8 cm, origin Japan, dated 1950–1960, in good condition with minor signs of aging, weight about 700 g.
Description from the seller
Good condition.
Description:
A rectangular lacquered tray with gently raised sides, finished in a deep, warm brown lacquer that has mellowed with age. A thin gold-lacquered rim outlines the form, lending quiet definition without overpowering the surface.
The decoration is executed in gold maki-e, depicting three small birds resting and fluttering among gracefully drooping willow branches. The fine, rhythmic lines of the leaves contrast with the rounded bodies of the birds, creating a light, lyrical composition. On the right side, a weathered tree trunk rendered in subdued tones anchors the scene and adds a sense of depth and asymmetry.
The overall mood is calm and poetic, evoking a spring landscape and the fleeting stillness of nature. Both functional and contemplative, this tray would have been suitable for serving light refreshments or for use as a writing or display tray, while also standing beautifully as a decorative object on its own.
