Charming small Indian side table from the mid-20th century. The top is richly carved with arabesques surrounding a depiction of Buddha in the 'Abhaya mudra' pose. With his hand raised, palm facing outward and fingers together, he offers protection and reassurance to those who encounter him. It symbolizes fearlessness and the peace that comes from enlightenment.
This very rare table is made of high-quality solid wood. It rests on three legs sculpted with elephant heads. The eyes are made of stone, and the trunks are crafted from ivory. The table is in excellent condition; only the legs may need a slight re-screw as they pivot a little if handled with slight force, but the table, when placed on the ground, remains very stable and solid.
