Description from the seller
Early 20th Century Jugendstil Large Hand-Carved Teak Wooden Box
In excellent condition – No reserve.
A beautifully large hand-carved dark wooden box in authentic Jugendstil style, dating from the early 20th century. Crafted from solid teak wood, this refined decorative box exemplifies the high level of craftsmanship typical of the Asian colonies (likely Indonesia or Ceylon), where such luxury export objects were produced for the Dutch and German markets around 1890–1910.
The lid is richly decorated with deep, geometric-relief carving combined with organic, flowing Jugendstil motifs, framed by an elegant beaded border. The sides are equally finely carved, creating a fully sculptural object with strong visual depth from every angle. The detailed relief carving catches the light beautifully, emphasizing the warm, dark tones of the polished teak surface.
This large box opens and closes properly and can be used as a jewelry box, document box, or refined collector’s storage piece.
Around the turn of the 20th century, Jugendstil design from Europe was merged with colonial craftsmanship in Indonesia and Ceylon. These rare hand-carved teak boxes were produced as high-end decorative export objects for the Dutch and German market and are now increasingly scarce, especially in such complete and well-preserved condition.
Condition
In excellent solid condition. The wood has been professionally polished and waxed. The carving remains crisp and sharp. The brass lock (not working), hinges and key are original.
