J.M.A. Biesheuvel published around twenty collections of short stories between 1973 and 2004. In the Collected Works all these volumes are included, from In de bovenkooi to Oude geschiedenis van Pa die leefde als een dier want hij schaamde zich nergens voor en hij was erg practisch.
This collection is supplemented with an afterword by Biesheuvel expert Onno Blom that provides a wonderful portrait of the writer, his work and his life. Furthermore, an extensive bibliography by Louis Heij and Pim van Putten**, an acknowledgments section, and an index to all the stories are included. The Collected Works are edited by Frans Blom and Mirjam van Hengel, assisted by Barber van de Pol, Nelleke van Maaren, and Biesheuvel’s first publisher Laurens van Krevelen.
