Description from the seller
This beautiful antique Florentine icon in the form of "altarolo" or portable altar is a beautiful reproduction (chromolithography) of the Madonna and Child by the Tuscan painter Lorenzo Monaco, carefully crafted on a wooden surface.
The icon features a small, refined Gothic-style altar with doors that enclose it, making it a unique work of art. The object is characterised by small details of great refinement.
The structure is reminiscent of 14th-century Tuscan polyptychs, with ogival cusps and a tripartite layout.
Inside, it features a central composition of the Madonna and Child on a gold background, flanked by figures of saints in the side panels and upper registers.
The icon has a height of 45 cm and a maximum width of 37 cm when the doors are opened (18,5 cm if closed).
The item is of Florentine manufacture, dating back to the 1940s.
This piece has a rich history and was made with the ancient technique of "gouache" by Florentine master gilders. The gold leaf is applied with a hot tempera, and the surface is meticulously burnished and satin-finished.
This object has been skillfully aged to evoke the essence of a 14th-century treasure. Through meticulous, controlled abrasion of the edges, rich brown glazes, and subtle oxidation stains, it captures the authentic charm sought after by early foreign tourists to Tuscany, appealing to their revivalist sensibilities. This carefully crafted artifact invites you to connect with history and appreciate the artistry of the past.
The back, visible when the doors are closed, is decorated with gold ornamental motifs in a medieval style.
The object is in good overall condition, showcasing the beauty of time and wear.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with registered, tracked shipping for your peace of mind.
