【Product details】
This lot consists of two traditional Japanese tools from the Meiji period: a branding iron (fire stamp) and a tailoring iron used for Japanese dressmaking. Both pieces are constructed with hand-forged iron shafts fitted with wooden handles, reflecting utilitarian craftsmanship rather than decorative intent.
Branding iron:
The branding iron is fitted with a cast iron stamp head bearing a raised motif. Due to surface wear and corrosion, the exact design cannot be identified with certainty, though it appears to be a floral pattern. Branding irons of this type were traditionally heated and used to mark wooden objects, leather, or textiles for identification or workshop use.
Japanese tailoring iron:
This tool is an essential implement used in traditional Japanese tailoring. The blade-shaped iron tip was heated and applied directly to fabric to press fine seams, define folds, or create precise guidelines in place of a spatula. Such tools were commonly used in kimono making and other forms of traditional garment construction.
Both pieces are in fair used condition. The iron components show extensive rust and oxidation consistent with age and long-term use. The wooden handles display wear, darkening, and patina from handling over time. The metal fitting on the handle is loose and moves, and verdigris is present. The tip of the tailoring iron shows a small chip. The branding iron’s stamp surface shows some wear but remains discernible. Please refer to the photos for details.
Dimensions: approx. H 27.8-31 cm W 2.3-3.5 cm D 2-2.3 cm
