Description from the seller
Devotional book from 1577, with 88 engravings, engraved by Christoffel van Sichem after drawings by
Hendrik Goltzius, Maarten van Heemskerck, Hieronymus Wierix.
The book has no title, and the binding is mute. This need for sobriety and humility truly reflects the spirit of Protestantism in reaction to the ornamentation and Baroque decoration.
The 'achevé d'imprimé' on the title page indicates: 15 November 1577.
The illustration, the fruit of van Sicem's labor and devotion, is exceptional, and while his engravings are brutal, the vignettes at the end of the book are of undeniable finesse.
One can find a series of statues representing the Apostles, Christ, and the Virgin Mary.
The book consists of three 'Stations of the Cross' as seen by the various artists named above.
The engravings measure 11×9 cm for the most part; there are some that are smaller. The apostles, for example, are from
6x8 cm. All the engravings are signed.
This collection is rare and valuable.
