Polychrome sculpture of the Immaculate Virgin – carved and gilded wood – 20th century
Elegant statue depicting the Immaculate Madonna, made of carved wood, painted and partially gilded, attributed to Italian devotional production.
The Virgin is depicted according to traditional iconography: a praying posture, hands joined on the chest, gaze directed upward, in an expression of intense sweetness and spiritual contemplation. She wears a finely decorated blue tunic with stylized floral motifs and a golden mantle, richly formed into moving and deep folds, which confer dynamism and solemnity to the figure.
Remarkable the quality of the carving, especially in the delicately modeled face and in the rendering of the drapery. The original polychromy is largely preserved, with occasional mission gilding and hand-painted details.
The Madonna rests on a sculpted base with a symbolic reference to the serpent, in accordance with the iconographic tradition of the Immaculate Conception.
