Crystal paperweight by Val Saint Lambert from Belgium, cobalt blue overglaze on a clear lead crystal, spherical form with a 9.5 cm diameter and 7 cm height, weighing 1161 g, in very good condition with minimal age-related wear.
Description from the seller
XXL paperweight / letter weight VSL Val Saint Lambert cobalt blue
The hand-cut and colorfully overlaid paperweights from the famous Belgian glassworks Cristalleries du Val Saint-Lambert were, apart from a few designs shown in the catalogs and officially marketed, usually made as after-hours work by the glass grinders.
Thus, for instance, in the book “Presse-papiers de prestige – Presse-papiers populaires” about VLS paperweights one reads: “The glassworkers created the paperweights during their breaks or after work. Then he could let his imagination run free – in contrast to mass production. Often the glass cutter refined the mass of the colored crystal. In this way we did small favors for one another. And the superiors turned a blind eye or sometimes even laid hands on it themselves. There are no signatures - except the ones we know were created by Charles Graffart; no dates or at most a few assumed or derived, when two first names interlock for a marriage, when a name signals retirement. (…) Nevertheless, the old Val Saint-Lambert paperweights, for the reasons mentioned above, have not yet received the recognition they deserve. This is all the more paradoxical as they are becoming rarer. Only the richest museums, the finest private or public collections possess one or the other specimen.”
These crystal objects are therefore unique pieces that were created roughly in the period between 1880 and 1930.
The spherical paperweight is made of clear lead crystal with a bright cobalt blue overlay. It features three side windows and one top window, with cartouches, grooves, and star-shaped motifs between them. At the bottom it bears a 16-point star.
Dimensions (approx. figures):
Weight: 1161 g
Largest diameter: 9.5 cm
